Noto and its Baroque Beauty - A Perfect Sicilian Town

Noto is one of south Sicily’s most beautiful towns. Deep in the south-east of the island, Noto shines bright thanks to its extraordinary Baroque architecture. The entire area was devasted by an earthquake in 1693, and then rebuilt in glorious Baroque style at the start of the 18th Century. In fact, the towns of the Val di Noto – which includes Noto itself – was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2002 for their examples of High Baroque architecture and town planning.

Today, Noto is a dream to visit, with honey-coloured buildings around every corner. Full of restaurants serving authentic food, picturesque piazzas with small bars, and charming boutiques, Noto has become a popular day trip destinations for anyone on holiday in south Sicily. It’s also ideally located close to the other Baroque towns of the area, like Scicli, Modica, and Ragusa, as well as some of the best beaches southern Sicily. Visiting Noto is a must!

If you are wondering what to see and do when you visit Noto, here’s a handy guide of some of the very best sights to see! But don’t forget the charm of just strolling around the narrow streets, drinking in the majestic beauty of Noto’s town centre.

What to See in Noto

Noto is a true Baroque masterpiece, where every street and square seems designed to impress. Strolling through the historic centre, visitors are surrounded by elegant churches, majestic palaces and refined architecture, all carved from the city’s signature golden stone. Throughout the year, Noto charms with its timeless atmosphere, but in May it becomes even more magical during the Infiorata, when floral creations transform the streets into open-air artworks.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele

Corso Vittorio Emanuele

Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main street through Noto’s historic centre. The entrance to the centre is under the magnificent Porta Reale, an arch that dates from 1838 that was commissioned by the ruling Boubon monarchy. It’s an impressive way to start your journey through the Baroque treasures of Noto.

Along Corso Vittorio Emanuele you will see many beautiful churches, characteristic bars with locals enjoying their coffees, palaces that are fantastic examples of the Baroque, stylish shops. There are three main piazzas along the street: Piazza Immacolata, Piazza Municipio, and Piazza XVI Maggio, each more charming than the last. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the best place to begin if you want to get to know the heart of the town; from here it’s easy to explore the hidden gems of Noto during your holiday in south-east Sicily.

San Domenico Church

Baroque Churches in Noto

There are over thirty churches in Noto, a large amount for the size of the town. And what churches they are! It’s well worth making time to visit a few of the churches in Noto as they are some of the best expressions of Baroque architecture in the area.

The star of the show for many is the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra. The façade is made of pale-yellow limestone that turns honey-gold at sunset with the low evening light, and includes columns, statues of saints, a bell tower, and a clock tower. Inside, the Cathedral is simply decorated with white paint, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for reflection.

Another marvellous Baroque church is San Domenico, faces Piazza XVI Maggio and the Fontana di Ercole. With its convex façade that includes both Doric and Ionic columns, San Domenico is an impressive sight that sits above the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The interiors have intricate marble decorations as well as superb examples of stucco.

Other noteworthy churches in Noto include the Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata, The Basilica del SS. Salvatore, the Church of Montevergini, and the Chiesa di San Carlo. All of these churches exhibit incredible Baroque architecture and provide beautiful backdrops around every corner of the town. Visit Noto and see how many churches you can spot during your time in the town!

Palazzo Ducezio

The Most Beautiful Palaces in Noto

Noto is full of incredible palaces that show off the town’s Baroque splendour 100%. Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata is a without a doubt one of the most beautiful. The palazzo was completed in 1765 in full Baroque style. Found on Via Corrado Nicolaci (the most important street in the town during the Infiorata Festival), this palazzo is famous for its intricate balconies, decorated with exquisite churubs, garlands, animals, and grotesques. Walking under these balconies is a feast for the eyes, and should not be missed.

Another extraordinary Baroque palace is Palazzo Ducezio, Noto’s town hall. This palace also dates from the mid 1700s and is located opposite the Cathedral in the Piazza Municipio. The twenty Ionic columns on the ground floor create a delicate feel to the building’s design, as does the palazzo’s convex central area. The oval hall – known as the Hall of Mirrors – was decorated in the 19thcentury and features stucco, gold, and fine mirrors that come together to create a sumptuous feeling.

Infiorata Festival in Noto

Noto Blooms during the Infiorata Festival

The Infiorata festival in Noto has taken place for over 40 years, on the third Sunday of May. One of Noto’s most beautiful streets, Via Corrado Nicolaci, is decorated in a carpet of flowers creating a beautiful sight full of colour, scents, and artistry. The Infiorata di Noto is a wonderful time to visit the town as the city comes alive, with international artists, local artisans, and town inhabitants celebrating the town’s beauty and culture. Each year has a different theme, be it religious, cultural, or artistic, and the creativity on show is something to behold. May is always a great time of year to visit Noto, but even more so thanks to the Infiorata Festival.

Part of the fun of a holiday in Sicily is travelling around the island. Sicily is larger than many people expect, and so it could take longer than you expect to get from A to Z. However, it is always worth the journey once you get to your final destination. Plus, the town centre is best explored on foot, so once you arrive all you need is some comfy shoes and some curiosity! Wondering how to make your trip to Noto a reality? Here are some options.

It’s a relaxed, romantic, and charmingly old-fashioned mode of transport. There are direct trains to Noto from Siracusa (c40 minutes), Ragusa (c1 hour, 40 minutes), and Modica (c1 hour).
