Once a flourishing Roman and then Byzantine colony, Siponto was abandoned due to devastating earthquakes in 1223 and 1255. The medieval basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the best examples of Puglian Romanesque architecture. In 2016 an installation by the artist Edoardo Tresoldi brought the early Christian basilica back to life.
On the northern side of the Gargano promontory, you can find the Lago di Varano. This is the largest coastal lagoon in Italy, over 10 km wide. An incredibly narrow strip of land – called the “isola” – separates the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. There’s an incredible biodiversity in the area including eucalyptus and pine trees, as well as flamingos, kingfishers, cormorants, herons, and many other animals.
