Things to see in Modica

If you can tear yourself away from relaxing at your villa, there are many lovely things to see! A stroll around the town centre in Modica lets you see some of the beautiful churches, the local shops, the museo civico, the Castello dei Conti and many other highlights.

San Giorgio Cathedral

Modica Alta's cathedral has a gorgeous façade and has an imposing location set above 250 steps. An impressive sight!

Civic Museum

You'll find a good collection of art, sculpture and archaeological finds that gives a good overview of the local area's art and history.

Castello dei Conti

The historic castle has recently been restored. With its wonderful views, and ancient history, it is worth visiting one of the occasional exhibitions.

San Pietro Church

Modica's second cathedral, again in an impressive Baroque style. The staircase is flanked by 12 statues of the Apostles. Beautiful!

Did you know?

There are so many curiosities about Modica! It's the home town of the poet Salvatore Quasimodo, it is the “city of 100 churches”, it is also where some scenes in Inspector Montalbano were filmed. It's simply beautiful, and so rich in history.

Earthquake

Like many of the surrounding towns, Modica was almost entirely destroyed by the devastating 1693 earthquake. It was rebuilt in a stunning Sicilian Baroque style.

“Town of 100 Churches”

Modica is sometimes called the “town of 100 churches”. It is true that the town is home to an extraordinary number of churches. Make sure you visit at least a few!

Salvatore Quasimodo

Nobel Prize-winning author Salvatore Quasimodo was born in Modica. He was awarded the prize in 1959 for his extraordinary poetry.

Montalbano

Inspector Montalbano – the hit TV show – is filmed in the area around Modica. Visiting this part of Sicily, you may see some familiar locations!

Modica's labyrinth winding streets, beautiful architecture and pretty piazzas make it the perfect town for a stroll. Wander through the town and be awed by its beauty.

Chocolate Granita

Granita is the best way to cool off in Sicily, and a chocolate version in Modica is a must! Sweet, delicious and cooling. Wow!
